About Us

Our Mission

Empowering voters. Defending democracy.
The League of Women Voters of Williamsburg Area encourages informed and active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. We engage the Greater Williamsburg community through voter education, candidate forums, and partnerships that strengthen civic participation.

Who We Are

We are a nonpartisan, grassroots organization welcoming all people of all backgrounds who care about free and fair elections, responsive government, and equitable access to the ballot. The League is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in principle and in practice—removing barriers to full participation regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, age, ability, religion, socioeconomic status, or political perspective.

What We Do

Through voter education, advocacy, and community programs, we help residents of the Greater Williamsburg area become informed and engaged citizens.

  • Voter Services: Registration and information tables at community events, colleges, and naturalization ceremonies; partnership with William & Mary’s Voter Engagement Committee; nonpartisan candidate forums.
League members and community volunteers can help register voters after completing Virginia’s online third-party registration training.
Our national League maintains an extensive voter services platform. Learn More at Vote411.org
  • Programs & Civic Education: Great Decisions foreign-policy series, Reading Together book group, eBook sponsorships with Williamsburg Regional Library, annual Women’s History Exhibit, and the Observer Corps promoting government transparency.
  • Scholarships: Annual awards to local high-school seniors pursuing studies in civics, government, law, or related fields.

Our History

Founded nationally in 1920 out of the women’s suffrage movement, the League has championed informed civic participation for over a century. Our local League began in 1962 and became the first integrated League in Virginia before being officially recognized in 1965.

Today we continue that proud tradition of civic leadership.
