Positions and Issues

The League of Women Voters pursues the dual purposes of voter education and advocacy - engaging in research studies and adopting positions on representative government,  international relations, natural resources, and social policy.

We Study Issues

In the League, a “position” is a statement of the League’s point of view on an issue, arrived at through member study and agreement (consensus or concurrence), approved by the appropriate board and used as a basis for League action.

Each state, regional, and local League board decides if, based on member understanding, and agreement, advocacy and taking action make sense in terms of timing, need, and effectiveness.

Our National Positions

League members use the national League public policy positions to support and advocate for the positions at national, state, local, and regional levels. These positions are developed democratically from studies which all league members participate in.

You can see our national positions at Impact on Issues: A Guide to Public Policy Positions.
Areas include: voting rights, citizen rights, natural resources, child care, health care, and many more.

Our Virginia State Positions

Our current League of Women Voters of Virginia positions, uniquely tailored for our Commonwealth, cover many topics of concern: election laws, fiscal policy, redistricting, natural resources, affordable housing, child care, and more. Current positions at LWV-VA Positioned For Action (Spring 2021). See more at lwv-va.org

Our Local Positions

We also have taken local positions on fiscal policy, housing, land use, education, and homelessness.
