Greetings from Susan Bivins, Pres. League of Women Voters of Williamsburg

July 4
Hope you had a great 4th of July! While celebrating our country, here's some Supreme Court decisions which I'm thankful for. Moore v. Harper and the defeat of the Independent State Legislature Theory and Allen v. Milligan which rebuffed the heavily gerrymandered districts of Alabama. See Moore V Harper and More!

Thank You Note from a 2023 Scholarship Winner

Scholarship
On June 29th, we received this lovely thank you note from Caroline Findlay, one of our LWV-WA 2023 Scholarship recipients.
Hi Mrs.Tripp,
I am so sorry for my late response. I really appreciate your consideration, and I’m so glad I received a scholarship from you all.
I will definitely look into joining the LWV, and I am happy to hear it is free to all students. I love the article about us and I’m definitely interested in reading more eVoters in the future.

In regards to the June 22 meeting, I was actually at ECU for my orientation so I was unable to attend. I apologize for not letting you know sooner, everything just got super busy in preparation for me to leave town. I will definitely send you all a short update after my first semester and I appreciate your well wishes and continued interest in my education.
Thank you,
Caroline Findlay

State & National League Updates

Join the LWV of Virginia Right to Vote Study Group

Right to vote
Good Day ~~first_name~~
We have  a new League study addressing the issue of expanding the right to vote in Virginia to encompass universal suffrage. Read former LWV-VA President Deb Wake's thoughts on the study here.

Some background: Virginia is one of a very small handful of states where the state constitution permanently disenfranchises all citizens with past felony convictions and at the same time grants only the governor with the authority to restore voting rights. Read the Brennan Center for Justice summary of current felony disenfranchisement and advocacy in Virginia.

Join the LWV of Virginia Child Care Study Issue Group

child study group

Hey ~~first_name~~
In Virginia, 42% of children fail the kindergarten readiness tests. 28% of working age women in Virginia are not working, in part due to a lack of child care. If child care exists in an area (which it often doesn't), it is unaffordable to many families in rural and low-income areas of the state and can require up to 30% of a family's income to pay the fees. If you are concerned about these issues, please join the child care issue group!...
We meet the second Sunday of every month 7:30-8:30 pm.

One Year After Dobbs: The Medical Impact of Anti-Abortion Laws

~ from Dr. Deborah Turner (LWVUS President)
One year ago today [June 24], the US Supreme Court took away our right to bodily autonomy. The ruling in Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization will go down in history as one of the most impactful decisions in our nation’s history. As a former gynecologic oncologist, I [Deborah Turner] know firsthand how this will impact not only the billions of Americans... Read More
