LWVUS is a proud national partner for this year’s John Lewis Good Trouble Day of Action falling on July 17. Our local League is excited to co-host with Williamsburg JCC Indivisible a John Lewis Good Trouble Day of Action observance this Thursday July 17 at the James City County Courthouse on Monticello Avenue.

Across the country, there will be similar events honoring John Lewis' courageous fight for justice, voting rights, and dignity for all.

From our LWV of Virginia President, Joan Porte:
On July 17, we’re sending a clear message:
In the United States, the power lies in the hands of the people. We demand an end to:
The administration’s extreme crackdown on our civil rights – from our right to vote to our right to protest and speak freely.
Politicians and lawmakers targeting Black and Brown Americans, immigrants, trans people, and others with hateful, dangerous policies.
The wealthy and well-connected slashing programs that working people rely on – including Medicaid, SNAP, and Social Security – to line their own pockets.
Together, we March in Peace and Act in Power.
(July 7, 2025)

So, Come hear our speakers: Charles S. Gates, Community Coordination Committee Chair with YJCW NAACP, Laura Tripp, Vice President of the League of Women Voters of the Williamsburg Area; and U.S. Marine Veteran and Professor of Philosophy, Jason Moulenbelt.

Please note: a core principle of a day of action is respect, nonviolence, peace. Avoid confrontations.

UNNECESSARY. DISASTROUS.
Press Release
On July 4th, President Trump signed into law a budget reconciliation package, “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” that will drastically cut health care for millions of Americans.

In response, the League of Women Voters of the United States issued the following statement:

“On the day we should be celebrating America, instead, President Trump and his allies are attempting to systematically dismantle the very reason for this holiday and put our country in harm's way by ripping away health care from millions of Americans.

“The budget reconciliation bill signed today will kick millions of people off Medicaid — the single largest source of health coverage in our country — a completely unnecessary and disastrous choice that does nothing to improve Americans’ lives.

“Congress faced a choice: health care for millions of Americans, or tax cuts for the rich. It chose the latter. Now, all Americans — particularly seniors, Americans with disabilities, low-wage workers, pregnant people, veterans, and children — will suffer.

“The American people deserve better. Join us in calling on Congress to restore funding to Medicaid and rolling back the draconian policies enacted in this terrible law.”

follow-us-social-media-500x500
Our LWV of Williamsburg social media reach and impact are expanding enormously.
Across all 6 platforms Williamsburg has garnered over 7,500 followers. On Bluesky alone we are approaching 6,000. We believe that the perilous times we face are contributing to this. Our daily posts are filled with messages about the stakes of democracy, our Constitutional crisis, and urgent calls to action. They also amplify the posts of both national and state Leagues. The public is hungry for information. Calls to action make them feel part of a larger effort. Our numbers show it.

RE-ENTRY RESOURCE FAIR
2025-VPRJ-Reentry-Resource-Fair-b-800x730.
The League participated in a Reentry Resource Fair at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail on Friday May 30. Pat Evers, Leslie Bowie, Jane Banfield, Denise Koch, and Maryann Simpson provided information about voting rights restoration and answered general questions about voting.

This is the second year we have participated in and are pleased to have a partnership with the jail and have enjoyed interacting with the residents.
